Nancy Smith, President, The Sims Label speaks about one of the most successful games of all time
Global phenomenon The Sims™ has today hit the entertainment record of 100 million sales, making it the world’s highest selling PC game of all time.
Since its release in 2000, The Sims has become a gaming sensation being sold in 22 languages and 60 countries around the world. The open-ended life-simulation game allows players to engage characters in everyday activities and relationships. Its success of The Sims franchise can be attributed to its appeal to ‘non-gamers’; it’s one of the few games to achieve popularity across all ages and genders, and more than half its players are female.
TheSims2.com is the vibrant online community of players of The Sims. The site has more than 4.3 million unique visitors per month, who have downloaded more than 70 million user-generated creations. A place to discover player creativity is on YouTube, where more than 100,000 videos and movies of The Sims have been shared, with about 200 million views.
The 100 million sales marks a milestone for California-based EA, which bought the creators of The Sims, video game company Maxis, in 1997. Founded in 1982, EA has been a pioneer of the early home computer games industry. Its most successful products include sports games published under their EA Sports label; games based on popular movie licenses; and games from long-running franchises such as The Sims; Need for Speed; Medal of Honor; and Command & Conquer.
So why do so many people across the globe love The Sims™ and what does the future hold?
