The most ambitious and far-reaching of Maxis' Sim lineage, Sim Earth puts you in charge of an entire planet throughout its 10 billion year lifespan. Your ultimate task is to guide the planet's inhabitants into the stars, from its humble single-celled roots.
The main threats you face include pollution, disease, famine, war and global warming. The controls available to you include the chance to move mountains and continents, creating different levels of species, and unleash tidal waves and earthquakes so as to reshape your planet.
A year after SimCity and Maxis released it's next title Sim Earth. Sim Earth put you in command of an entire World over billions of years, and can be seen as the first "spore" in the ideas and overall aim of the game. However, unlike SimCity the game was criticise for the lack of control. It seemed like you were just watching what was happening and had no real influence on what happened, however the game was admired. The overall aim of the game was to reach a point where your world could reach the stars and start travelling. To do this you had to choose from a variety of different species and watch them envole. The atmosphere, temperature and landmasses could also be changed and adapted. This game also featured disasters and events that could shape life on your world.
Released in 1990 the game was availavle on the following platforms, IBM PC, Commodore Amiga, TurboGrafx-16 / TurboDuo, Apple Macintosh, X68000, Sega Mega-CD, Super NES and Windows.
